My Illustrated Colfax Banners are up!!

I got a notice late on Friday night, November 15, that the eight different banners would start going up at 4am on Saturday morning along the 2-3 miles of East Colfax Avenue, the longest, wickedest street in America. It was around 10 am the next morning that I was finally able to get out on my bike and pedal up Colfax Ave, dodging traffic, from the Capitol up through Josephine Street.

… and yep… there they were. All eight designs, repeated over the three miles. Still being hung up.

It’s kind of brilliant to see my artwork along East Colfax. I cannot really describes how all this feels, but it certainly puts a rare smile on my face.

New Artwork for Banners Along Colfax Avenue

This is pretty brilliant. So, I was approached by the Colfax Avenue Business Improvement District (Colfax BID) that represents businesses along the section of East Colfax Avenue between Grant Street and Josephine Street, about a 2 mile stretch of the 30 or so miles that Colfax fully runs.

Now, I’ve done work with Colfax BID in the past (just see the Characters of Colfax comic that I’m currently doing for them.) Every year or so, the BID provides banners that hang on the light posts that run up and down this 2 miles stretch. In the past they have been holiday themed, or focusing on various businesses, or (like the past year) featuring artwork from some of the artists that work in the tattoo shops along Colfax.

Well this year, the BID asked me to provide the artwork for the banners, featuring illustrations of the architecture of Colfax buildings from the past and present: The Ogden Theatre, Tom’s Diner, The Newhouse Hotel, The Lion’s Lair, Pete’s Kitchen & Satire Lounge, The Aladdin Theatre, Sid King’s Crazy Horse, and (of course) an illustration of RTD’s 15 bus that runs up and down Colfax. This is a brilliant opportunity that I jumped for.

So, the artwork is now all completed and you can see below. The files are at the printers and should be up along Colfax around Thanksgiving. The BID is having a party, celebrating their 30 years of representing the Avenue on November 20th at the Filmore. You can see all the details at the link.

… and here’s the artwork. I’ll post more photos once the banners go up!

Characters of Colfax: Donnacha Og ORinn

I was recently approached by Colfax Business Improvement District (or Colfax BID) to help them out in their effort to focus on some of the people that make Denver’s Colfax Avenue… well… Colfax.

I’ll be creating a comic every other month, featuring some of these people and their stories. Here’s the second one featuring Donnacha Og ORinn
